Security and Performance of Networked Systems

Welcome to the homepage of the group for Security and Performance of Networked Systems at UCLouvain. The group is part of the department of computer science INGI at the ICTEAM research institute. Our teaching activities are embedded in the Louvain School of Engineering (EPL).

The group's mission is to improve the security of modern networked systems and to contribute to the understanding of their performance and behavior. To this end, we develop innovative methods and techniques to monitor such systems and to detect and prevent attacks against them. We also employ mathematical modeling to understand the impact of new protocols and services.

Head of the group is Professor Ramin Sadre.

Research

Our research activities target the following domains:

  • Intrusion detection and prevention for the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Intrusion detection and prevention for Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and SCADA systems
  • Performance monitoring and modeling for networked applications

Our research takes place in the context of different research projects and collaborations with industrial partners. Those currently include:

  • The ARC project RAINDROP where we use performance modeling and scheduling techniques to obtain efficient deployment plans for Cloud/Edge applications. Please check the project homepage.
  • The Win4Doc project AIDECOMPILER in collaboration with Hex-Rays aims at improving reverse engineering with AI techniques.
  • The Win4Doc project IoTAdSec in collaboration with Lacroix develops intrusion detection solutions for Smart City IoT systems.
  • The Win2Wal project CriticalIDS in collaboration with Alstom. We design AI-based intrusion detection techniques for railroad OT/IT systems.
  • The CyberExcellence project, a large-scale research project on cybersecurity initiated by CyberWal. You can find all the details about this project on its homepage.
  • (Ended in 2025) The Win2Wal project PrEDICT in collaboration with the Belgian telecom operator VOO/Orange. We develop machine learning based techniques to predict and analyze failures in telecom infrastructures.
  • (Ended in 2025) The Win2Wal project CRS2 in collaboration with RHEA/Nexova designed and implemented techniques for the automated construction of cyber-range scenarions using user profile analysis and constraint solvers.
  • (Ended in 2025) The MecaTech project SWITCH on the monitoring of transport infrastructure with IoT sensor networks.
