MOOCS

Intervention pour "Le Vif" sur les MOOCs (Septembre 2013, en français)

L'UCL est co-fondateur du portail Océan qui offre des MOOCs francophones (en français, des "flots").

EdX est une plateforme de MOOCS (Massive Open Online Courses) fondée par le MIT et par l'Université de Harvard. La plateforme est sans but lucratif et regroupe une trentaine d'institutions universitaires à travers le monde. L'UCL a rejoint edX en février 2013. Quatre premiers cours de l'UCL seront offerts sur edX dès janvier 2014.

Cette participation de l'UCL fait suite à deux initiatives antérieures de collaboration entre l'UCL et le MIT. D'une part, la signature en juin 2011 d'un accord d'échange MIT-UCL en matière de recherche (voir MIT-Belgium Seed Fund), ainsi que, depuis 2012, un programme d'accueil de stagiaires du MIT dans des entreprises belges (voir le lien "Cinq stagiaires du MIT à l'UCL").

NetMob conferences

NetMob is the main conference on the scientific analysis of mobile phone datasets. All editions of the conference have so far been held at the Medialab at MIT (Cambridge, MA). Proceedings are published in electronic format and are freely available.

Data for Development challenge (D4D)

The Data for Development (D4D) challenge is a challenge that was organized by our team at the Université catholique de Louvain with data and support from the telecom operator Orange and with the collaboration of partners at MIT, at the World Economic Forum, at Global Pulse (United Nations) and with GSMA. The challenge is an open data challenge, encouraging research teams around the world to use four datasets of 2.5 billion anonymous call patterns of Orange's Ivory Coast subsidiary, to help address society development questions in novel ways. 150 research groups have participated in the challenge. The results of the challenge have been announced at a special session of the NetMob2013 conference at MIT in May 2013.

Privacy, metadata and the NSA revelations

In a Science Report article "Unique in the crowd" we used 15 months of data from 1.5 million people to show that 4 points --approximate places and times-- are enough to identify 95% of individuals in a mobility database. Our work shows that human behavior puts fundamental natural constraints to the privacy of individuals.
