We developed various grafting methods in order to chemically (bio-)functionalize AFM probes (tips) and to chemically nanopattern surfaces. Chemically modified probes were used to map chemical functionalities on surfaces such as additives dispersion on the surface of polymers or chemical nanopatterns. They were also used to realise single-molecule force spectroscopy and to characterise the bioactivity of nano-biosensors.

CAFM of additive migration in PP
Study of the migration of additives (antioxydant and UV stabilizer) at the surface of compression moulded polypropylene with chemically modified AFM tips (see Langmuir 2001, 17, 6351 and Langmuir 2001, 17, 8287).
CAFM chemically nanopatterned surface
Left: Procedure to fabricate chemically nano-patterned surfaces. Centre: Lateral force microscopy image of COOH-ended nanodots in a fluorinated background. Right: Polystyrene nanodots grafted from chemically nano-patterned surfaces (see Nano Lett. 2004, 4, 365, Nanotechnol. 2006, 17, 1160).
SMFS on biofunctionalized surface
Left: Principles of AFM tip bio-functionalizationfor single-molecule force spectroscopy. Center: Gold surface grafted with antigens. Right: Typical force-extension curves obtained between bio-functionalized surfaces and tips and corresponding rupture force histograms (see Anal. Chem. 2007, 79, 6488).
